Extreme Dandruff For Years and Dry Hair
by Mel
My hair used to be extremely damaged and wouldn't grow, but I finally got it to grow back from going completely organic with hair products, and it's much stronger and shinier. (I'm biracial so my hair is very wavy)
The main problem I have now is dry hair and horrible dandruff. Though my hair hardly breaks anymore it's still unmanageable when it comes to straightening (about once a month, I blow out) because it has no moisture of it's own, I usually have to put things like olive oil in it to help keep it moisturized.
I have had dandruff for as long as I can remember and I've never gotten rid of it. I can wash my hair and the exact same day my scalp will itch and I'll still have dry flaky areas like around the hairline and towards the back of the neck. If I use dandruff shampoos it will help me for maybe a week and then it comes back. It's slightly better since I started doing vinegar rinses however it's not solved my problem.
Does my "dry" scalp have to do with my hair not retaining moisture? and if not what can I do to restore my hairs normal moisture balance?

Hi Mel, A lot of times people that have scalp problems make them worse by trying so many things (which typically just over dry the scalp even more) The more you cleanse your scalp, the more you dry it out, which causes your body to send oil (or sebum) to your scalp to replenish it. A lot of times that sebum hardens and causes dandruff.
In extreme cases, sebum buildup can cause hairloss and breakage because it can clog the folicle and prevent growth or cause dryness of the hair because it is blocking the sebum from moisturizing the hair. It becomes a vicious cycle.
There is a product called Nioxin (look up their website) It is formulated especially for scalp problems and thinning hair. Get the formula for Coarse, Curly, thinning hair. It should help your scalp and the health of your hair tremendously. The website will tell where you can find it at a salon near you. I believe you could also order it online. They are owned by Proctor and Gamble and have a great money back guarantee policy. As long as you buy it from them or a salon and don't find it in CVS or something. You can also order a kit that will send you small bottles of a whole regime you can use. They have shampoo and conditioner and styling products. They are not crazy expensive either.
Biotin is also an amino acid you can buy at a health food store that helps your body process protein more efficiently, which in turn helps your hair, skin, and nails. If you try these two things you should start seeing a big improvement in your scalp and your hair in about 30 days. I hope this helps.
